San Rafael

San Rafael, the largest city in Marin County, boasts the northernmost of the California Missions, Saint Raphael the Archangel, founded by the Franciscan Fathers in 1817. The county seat of Marin, San Rafael is large, diverse, eclectic and historic. That history stretches from California’s beginnings, with the founding in 1817 of Mission San Rafael on the old El Camino Real, to the construction of the eye-popping Marin Civic Center in the 1960’s.
